6ths win Title

6ths Grand Final Report – by Ian Pewtress

After chasing runs in the last two games to make the big dance the boys were confident they could win from any position. The J grade boys went the Grand Final once again having not played their opposition Southside East Caulfield during the home & away games.

After winning the toss East Sandy elected to have a bowl on the first day. Bryce & Jacob Gatt (good Gatt or 2 chains) opened the bowling. This paid dividends in the 3rd over with Jacob sending the stumps everywhere having the opposition 1 for 2 runs. Intensity was up & the bowling on the money with Southside reeling at the first drinks break 3/33. Kingy had chipped in with a couple of sneaky overs either side of drinks picking up a handy wicket. Dan Gatt 12 overs 1/26 & Peter Loney 10 overs 0/19 came into the fray bowling a treat. Dan picked up a critical wicket with Southside’s main run scorer Chandla LBW for 18 just before the lunch break to have Southside 4/79. After lunch Bernard (Southside’s No.3) who was showing resistance suffered at the hands of a run out combination, which started from a fast moving on drive knock down from Oracle scooped up by a fast moving Bryce and executed by our evergreen keeper Fletch.

Southside were now reeling 5/95 and with the boys coming home with a wet sail dismissed the remaining wickets in the 52nd over, all out for 138. Ripper day in the field with everyone contributing. Jacob Gatt a standout with 4/15 off 12 overs.

Day 2

Our openers started well with a 4 off the first over. Smacker and Fletch did the job taking the shine off the ball until Smacker lost his middle peg from Southside’s Jones who was bowling some nice cutters and good pace. Reece Houston came to the wicket & showed his resilience defending some tight bowling until he succumbed to another delivery from Jones leaving us 2/24 at drinks. This brought Bryce Pewtress to the wicket. He started with confidence playing some lovely drives and finding the boundary early. Fletch unfortunately snicked one through to the keeper & was gone leaving us at 3/45. Jacob Gatt came to the crease and quickly established a desperately needed partnership with Bryce to steady the ship. The pair put on 78 with some beautiful stokes & smart batting taking the many singles being offered with a defensive field. Unfortunately Jacob edged a ball through to the keeper bringing him undone. Jacob 4 – 4s & his first 6 ever = 35. This brought the previous week’s match winner to the crease the Doggster. Bryce continued to punish the opposition leaving us at lunch needing 4 runs for the win.

Doggy & Bryce finished the innings off on the 30th over giving the 6ths a convincing win. Bryce remained not out 64 & refused to take his pads off until late that night when someone finally bowled him via the Duncan ST Wheelie bin. Jacob Gatt man of the match with great bowling and batting.

After the club struggled for numbers early in the year, the 6ths did well to get through to Christmas undefeated. We had some memorable cameos & help from everyone in the club to get us over the line. Out of which came success to a team who loves cricket & the rewards participation can bring. Everyone played their role to make a great 6ths Premiership cricket team. A ripper year with two father sons getting to experience a flag together. Congratulations Kingy & Peter Loney playing in their first flag & our oldest septuagenarian player Fletch who had the gloves & opened the batting for the entire year. If ever you wondered what it feels like to taste success – check Doggies & Bryce’s photos. Well done boys!!!!!
